ANDALUSIA AND THE UK
Andalucía has got
a big relation with the UK. First, in the South part of Andalucía there is a
little land named Gibraltar. It was Spanish land but nowadays is UK land. Why
does it belong to the UK?Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory on the south coast of Spain known
for the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426m limestone ridge at its centre. Gibraltar
occupies 7 sq. km of a peninsula bordered to the north by the region of
Andalusia. First settled by Moors in the Middle Ages and later ruled by Spain,
the outpost was joined to Britain in 1713. Because in 1713 Spain gave it to the UK in
the treaty of Utrech (and the island Menorca too, but now Menorca is Spanish
territory); Gibraltarians speak English,
Spanish, and a curiously accented, sing-song mix of the two, swapping back and
forth midsentence.
There are many
Andalusian expressions that come from English words like “Chevingá” from the
English word “Chewing Gum”. Also the expression “aliquindoi” from the English
“I look and do it”. And finally there are many England
infrastructures in Andalucía like the Jockey Club pavillion in Jerez or “El
barrio obrero” in Huelva. It’s a beautiful neighborhood which has got a mix
between England and Andalucía infrastructures.
