The Gold Tower in Seville
The Gold Tower (Torre del Oro) in Seville is a watchtower located on the left bank of the Guadalquivir River in Seville. It´s one of the most characteristic works of art in the city of Seville
It´s height is 36 meters. Possibly its name in Arabic was Bury al-dahab or Borg-al-Azajal, referring to its golden glow reflected on the river. During the restoration of 2005, it was shown that this glow, which until then was attributed to a tiling, was a mixture of lime mortar and pressed straw.

It is a tower formed by three bodies: the first body, dodecagonal, was built between 1220 and 1221 by order of the almohad governor of Seville, Abu al-Ula. The second body, also dodecagonal, was built by Peter the Cruel in XIV 8 century. Upper cylindrical body, it was built in 1760 by the military engineer Sebastián Van der Borcht.

It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931 and has been restored several times. In the contemporary age, it was restored in 1900, between 1991 and 1992, in 1995 and 2005. The Navy played an important role in preserving the Gold Tower. It is very well preserved, and it harbors the Naval Museum of Seville, very much visited by tourists.

Washington Irving in Andalusia

Washington Irving (April 3, 1783 – November 28, 1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, and several histories of 15th-century Spain dealing with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846.
He made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of observational letters to the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After moving to England for the family business in 1815, he achieved international fame with the publication of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. in 1819–20. He continued to publish regularly — and almost always successfully — throughout his life, and just eight months before his death (at age 76, in Tarrytown, New York), completed a five-volume biography of George Washington.

Irving, along with James Fenimore Cooper, was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and Irving encouraged American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe. Irving was also admired by some European writers, including Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Thomas Campbell, Francis Jeffrey, and Charles Dickens. As America's first genuine internationally best-selling author, Irving advocated for writing as a legitimate profession, and argued for stronger laws to protect American writers from copyright infringement.

Old English Homes at Cerro del Hierro

ENGLISH INFLUENCE IN CERRO DEL HIERRO, SIERRA NORTE OF SEVILLE
I would like to tell you about a particular place from the North Mountains of Sevilla, where I usually go with my family and friends to enjoy the nice nature and the beautiful landscape of the area.  It is called Cerro del Hierro by a small town called San Nicolás del Puerto, in the Northern Mountain range of Sevilla province. It is a characteristic mining village.
In XIX century English traded with iron that was inside of the mine. In 1895 William Braird Mining and Co Ltd, came from Scotland. Between 1895 and 1932 the production of mineral was 7, 63 million tons.
In 1946 the works of the mines were taken over by a Spanish company, Nueva Montaña Quijano and later by Cerro del Hierro, S.A.
Memories still remain such as the railway linking the main city with Cazalla de la Sierra, a town near Cerro del Hierro. This old railway was modified by the government to set a path called Vía Verde, where people can walk and practice cycling, horseback riding, skating…

Through this path we can see the famous houses where engineers and mine managers lived.
As well, there are archaeology remains of a church and a market where all the workers paid with a special coin.
Triana Bridge over The Guadalquivir and gates of the Royal Tobacco Factory of Sevilla (University today) were built with the iron from this mine. Iron was transported to the Port of Sevilla.
Nowadays the mines are abandoned. Since 2003 an area of 363 hectares were declared as natural monument.
At the end of Vía Verde, we appreciate more than 120 ways to climbing. Sometimes I go to practice this wonderful sport with my father. I love seeing from the top of the way the stunning contrast of green mountains and blue sky.
For these reasons we should keep it clean and well preserved, in order to enjoy adventure, fun and the knowledge of the natural environment offered this old town.
